When you are building a home it is important to be prepared when it is time to select your colors. You first want to read the section of the Homeowner Manual that discusses how to prepare and make your selections. Selections will vary from builder to builder as well as from neighborhood to neighborhood. Some builders have a selections room in their office to make it easy for you to make your selections while others have to go to their vendor’s showrooms to make selections. Keep in mind custom finishes typically cost more so be prepared to get out your checkbook. Everyone is unique and so are your ideas. Some people want all neutrals to make it easy; others want to coordinate with furniture or fabrics. No matter what your color ideas entail you want to prepare for the selection process by doing the following:

• View all of the models and anything in the model that has color
• Take notes of colors you like in the models
• If you have friends or relatives in the neighborhood ask to view their choices
• Bring anything you want to match (pillow, armrest cover, etc) to the showroom
• Have an idea of your style – contemporary, traditional, country, etc.
• Will you be purchasing new furniture and decorations or using your existing items
• Friends and relatives can help with the selection process but keep in mind you have to live with your decision, not them
• Keep in mind your family’s daily activities, hobbies, entertaining, pets, kids
• Dye lots on samples may be different from the actual product due to the manufacturer’s coloring process and environmental factors affecting the samples
• Take note of the neighbors on both sides of your new home so you don’t select the same exterior colors

Builders try to keep their samples up to date but sometimes manufacturers retire or eliminate colors or product lines. If you select a color that is discontinued you will be notified and you will have to reselect that item. Make sure you retain your color selection sheet and put it in your Homeowner Manual so you have it for future reference.
